Alumni Updates: Miranda Malone
Welcome back to Alumni Updates!
This time, hear from Miranda Malone:
Hello!
I graduated from UChicago in 2021 with a BA in Neuroscience and a minor in East Asian Languages and Civilizations. During my time at UChicago, I was a goalkeeper on the varsity women’s soccer team, the events coordinator and then the treasurer for the NEURO Club, a member of the Women’s Athletic Association, a research assistant for the Meltzer Lab Comprehensive Care Program, and a research assistant for the Gallo Memory Lab’s trans-cranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) project.
Following graduation, I traveled abroad! First, to Mexico for vacation. Then, I volunteered in Honduras as a Patient Coordinator at the One World Surgery Center with Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH). There, I worked closely with local medical staff and international surgical specialists that would visit during medical brigades. Alongside this, I would care for a group of kids on the NPH Honduras ranch.
I returned to Chicago in the summer of 2022 and have since been volunteering at Shirley Ryan Ability Lab. I have also been an Assistant Coach for the UChicago women’s soccer team. Besides this, I am continuing to travel. I was abroad in Japan, and I will be visiting Mexico again soon.
Currently, I plan to start medical school August 2023 at Rosalind Franklin Chicago Medical School, pursuing an M.D.
My advice to current undergrads: Don’t get too hung up on your plans not going perfectly. As long as you seek opportunities you are genuinely interested in rather than resume-fillers, things will work out eventually. Plus, life is a lot more fun that way!
